How to control the water; 4:21; Why control the water?

If we take gouache or oil paint, for example, we can easily figure out how to make a color lighter or darker.
We need to add white to achieve a lighter tint or black to get a darker shade.
To change the tone of a color (that is, to make it less saturated), we add gray.
You probably already know this from color theory. I'm not sharing anything new...

But what about watercolor?

In my technique, I've gotten used to working without white watercolor. Yes, in some colors, like Naples Yellow or Cerulean Blue, the paint contains white, which is why they are so opaque. But I don't use white separately.

So how to lighten a color? What can replace white? Or how to darken it?

In watercolor painting, white is the paper. Therefore, to lighten a tint, we need to add more water. And to increase saturation, we need to add more paint. To darken a tone or shade, we simply add black in the necessary amount.
In this video we will practice changing the value or intensity of color in watercolor.
